The Sounds of Pomona
Our Story :
What began as a nice conversation on a summer afternoon would develop itself into the Sounds of Pomona Music Project. At that time, Martin Perez, Rudy Carrasco, his brother, Bobby Carrasco, and myself, Henry Gonzalez were sitting around a fire talking about the music of the 60's and we had a dream of putting the band members back together again so they could jam out and we could hear those songs that were so close to our hearts growing up. So the conversation continued that afternoon trying to remember the members of the musical bands that existed back then. Little did we know that over time, it would develop into this project that exists today surrounding gosh knows how many people, how many artists, how many songs, and precious memories of a time long gone. It was pretty difficult trying to remember the names of the band members, but we knew that we could dig, we could research, and that we could find out. Actually, that's what ended up happening with so many people, involving so many memories, eventually bringing materials and information that today make up the Sounds of Pomona Project. Should anyone desire to know, it began in a backyard under an avocado tree in the mid afternoon, discussing this idea of recreating that sound that went all over this Valley and to the world. A beautiful beginning to such a great project.
As of this writing, there have been numerous people who have brought pictures, posters, flyers and yes the music, the beautiful music that we danced to, we sang to, and we fell in love to. We sincerely hope that you'll enjoy this project and all that it brings to you, your memories, your heart, and your mind and that going forward you'll share with us the excitement of such a glorious time and most importantly that our young people can grasp what was going on in the fabulous era we grew up in.

Poncho Sanchez visits Pomona summer of 1999
The youngest of eleven children, Poncho Sanchez was born in Laredo, Texas and reared in Norwalk, California, while he attended Cerritos College.[1] Growing up, he was exposed to and influenced by two different styles of music: Afro-Cuban music (mambo, son, cha-cha, rumba, guaracha, and Changui) by Tito Puente and others, and bebop jazz, including the works of Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker.[4]
Originally a guitarist, he discovered his talent for singing during an audition for the R&B band The Halos that rehearsed across the street from his residence.[5] Sanchez became the lead vocalist of The Halos, and would go on to teach himself the flute, the drums, and timbales before finally deciding in high school to pursue conga drumming above all.
Sanchez has released dozens of LP and CD albums.[6]

Social club memoirs
Someone asked me awhile back about it what it was like, at least in my memory from the
'60s on through our life.
Talking in terms of the clubs and social groups that used to hang around together. Boy they sure were a lot of clubs.
The Jade's, thee IVLs, the Animal Tribe, The Ethics, Traffic, Funny Company, Riverside Socials the San Bernardino Playmates....just Club after Club after Club.
The object of their involvement or should I say participation was simply to join together and seek a good time. Guys meeting Girls, inviting, flirtinh, learning the latest moves of course and trying to dress appropriately, that's all part of what we experience back then.
A lot of folks don't get the opportunity to meet people like that or do things like that, which is unfortunate but for us that experience was off the Hook
